My NCS experience week 2!

I was strangely more scared for what would lie ahead in the second week than I was for the first week...

Day1
When I arrived at the Youth Hostel I was so excited because the place looked considerably posher than Hatfield activity centre. But we were sat around for a while whilst we awaited everyone's arrival which got very boring. But once everyone had arrived we were told that our room arrangements had been changed and I had to share a room with three girls I already knew well but two other girls who I didn't know at all. I decided straight away that I would end up hating them so I really wasn't looking forward to the rest of the week and I decided I would spend as little time as possible in my dorm room. When we went upstairs to our rooms I was soon proven to be wrong and Hollie and Lucy are two of the loveliest/funniest people I have ever met. When we later had tea we realised that the food here was much better than at Hatfield! We had choice of what we ate and I don't think I could've been for full if I tried. Later we all took to the classroom and designed our own NCS poster and sandwich board.

Day2
On day 2 the red team (me, Jess, Nikita, Danny, Erin, Johnny, Ed, Ryan, Luigi, Matthew, Hollie) had to take on the community challenge! Each team were given a theme and ours was "Fashion & Music". Throughtout the day we had to get photos of each member of our team wearing our NCS sandwich board. We were given a set of generic challenges (which each team had to do) and a set of themed challenges. The generic challenges involved taking a photo with a policeman holding our sandwich board, go to a charity and gain ideas about volunteering or a social action project, buying a souvenir relevant to our theme, explain the NCS programme to a stranger using 5 keywords and getting a relevant themed business to put our NCS poster in their window. As we were going around York we managed to get CLASSIX to let us take a photo with our NCS poster in their window. For our themed souvenir, we went into a shop called 'Shared Earth' and picked up a keyring in the shape of a guitar. This related to our theme by being a musical instrument and as it is a keyring can easily be attached to a bag as a fashion accessory.

Our themed challenges involved getting a busker to incorporate the words "National Citizen Service" into his song, finding a flyer advertising a music event based in York and getting 5 external people to sign it with the five keywords and taking a photo of each person, find a pair of shoes costing over £500, taking a photo with a shop assistant holding our sandwich board and take a photo with as many musical instruments as possible.

We completed all of our challenges including a bonus challenge which was to take a photo of as many clocks as possible!

Day3
Wednesday was a lazy day! We had a presentation about jobs and futures and then we had a walk down to York City football club to get ideas about our community project!

Day4
This was my favourite day! We went to the RAF base! We got to go into the tower thingymabob and the air traffic control base and we even got to sit in one of the planes! I don't really have much to say because it we were pretty much just talked to all day about planes and stuff which was so so interesting but I can't really remember all of it to tell you... But they gave us a free badge and a pen!
Later that day, Jess, Nikita and I got cluedo from the youth hostel and played it twice. It was so much fun. but Jess cheats ;)

Day5
Home time! We got up really early because our leaders were meanies and thought it would be funny to play a prank on us and tell us we had to be up earlier than we really did. *grumpy face* It was a pretty sad day because we had to say bye to the people who weren't doing the same community project as us. But NCS has been a great experience and I have made friends with people who I will never forget!

But just remember... Sadie's gonna get you.
