A few months ago I was watching a Carrie Fletcher video when she started talking about NCS. NCS stands for National Citizen Service and you can find more out about it here: http://www.ncsyes.co.uk/
After signing up and persuading my boyfriend to come along too, it wasn't long before the morning of Monday 22nd July came and I was dragging my suitcase down the stairs. After being confident for the previous month, I was now filled with so many worries. "Will my roommates like me?" "Will everyone be horrid?" "What if my suitcase is so much bigger than everybody else's and I look stupid?"
After arriving at the pickup point it was already obvious who was friends with who and I was worried that I wouldn't fit in to any of the social groups.
However, once we had arrived and dumped our suitcases, we sat down for lunch. This was when I met 4 new friends! I ended up sharing a room with one of them :)
We had to share a room with another girl who we hadn't met at lunch so we were worried to see if she was nice or not. It turns out she would cause more problems for us than we thought. But, that aside, we were pleased with our room (if you forgot about the none flushing toilet and the freezing cold shower) and headed down stairs. For the rest of the day we had tea, played the music master, and probably did a lot more things which I can't remember.
Day2!
As part of the red team, day 2 consisted of a morning of climbing and an afternoon or rowing. I came on this trip hoping to get rid of my fear of heights so I was both excited and scared to take on the climbing wall. Being one of the last to climb the wall and seeing almost everyone get to the top, the pressure was on. I won't go into the rest in detail because I do not want to humiliate myself further but let's just say the next part involved me complaining a lot and then resulted in tears. Needless to say my fear of heights still exists. But it was still a lot of fun!
After lunch, we got in a thingy (2 canoes strapped together) and we went on a treasure hunt around a lake. I was on the yellow team with Erin Briony Nikita Luigi and Johnathan. But after Johnathan had to go inside, Matt took over and lead us to victory. Rowing was a lot harder than I was expecting to be honest! but after I got into it it was so easy! To make sure my team won, we ended up jumping into the lake and swimming to the shore rather than rowing for the rest of the way... My jumper is still not completely dry.
Day3
On Wednesday the red team headed out doors to take part in some team building activities. We all had to put our hands into a circle and hold hands with someone else and then try and untangle ourselves. It was so hard (and sometimes painful) but we had a lot of fun doing it. Afterwards we were given a challenge. There were three barrels with 3 logs inbetween which didnt fit to each barrel. We had to get a (imaginary) monkey from each barrel into the middle. The task was estimated to take between 30-40 minutes but we completed it in 8! After, we went on to do some first aid training and we are all now (if not already) educated in CPR and recovery position and whatnot.
Day4
The hardest day of all. With no breakfast, the red team headed outside to the Commando challenge. Essentially it is a day of survival training. The red team were split into two teams. Team Haggis and Team DR Pepper. We had to complete a series of challenges (including a scavenger hunt) to earn points. With these points we had to buy food, a sheet to make a shelter out of, sleeping bags, everything we needed. For lunch we spent 80 points. I ate half a sandwich, an orange segment and about half a yoghurt. Further into the afternoon we spent many hours chopping and sorting wood. After we eventually had enough (which was many hours later) I built the fire and for the next few hours had to keep it going until I went to sleep and other people took it in turns. For our tea we were given 2 beef stock cubes, potatoes, carrots, meatballs and an onion. Since we had a vegetarian in the group, we both ran 2 laps of the area in order to get our beef stock exchanged for vegetable stock. We ended up making some brothy stew type thing which I have to admit was the most beautiful thing I had probably ever eaten. When I woke up at 4 in the morning I was offered a Haribo which was probably the tastiest Haribo I'd ever eaten. The night brought with it a terrible sleep though.. I had about half an hour sleep which made me fall asleep everywhere the next day.
Day5
Friday consisted of recieving our Commando challenge certificates (yay!) and packing up to go home.
It was such an amazing week and I met so many amazing people. I can't wait for next week when we get to meet up again for another fun packed week!
