Whilst reading the lovely Growing Goats and Girls by Rosanne Hodin, I stumbled upon a section titled The May Gap. This part of the chapter discusses the May vegetable gap Rosanne and her family get on the farm: the time where the leeks are withered and soft, seedlings are just about starting to come up, and any vegetables ready to be picked are a long few weeks away.
May is not my monthly gap as I have had plenty of radish to pick this month as well as lettuce and spinach for yummy salads. And, as I have not had a full growing year, I can't tell you when my monthly gap actually is. However, I have a strong feeling April will be my gap. It's the month I sow the pumpkins, the radish are growing at the plot but not quite at a harvestable size yet, and if my leeks survive that long they will probably be a bit past their best when I pull them out of the ground.
In May my plot finally seems to be getting filled with life.
When is your gap month?
