Ranking Oat Milks Based on Taste and Environmental Impact | REPOST

As a human intolerant to cow's milk and trying to reduce my environmental impact on the planet, I have tried my fair share of different oat milks and have developed some substantial opinions on each. I have ranked them on my opinion of their taste and their environmental impact in regards to their carbon footprint. There are many more ways to judge your milk but these are the two I have decided are currently most important to me. All of this information is based on my own research but if you find any errors or more information, please leave a comment as I endeavour to educate myself as much as possible about my consumption choices. Please note: this blog post will be most relevant to those of you living in the UK! This blog post is a long one so feel free to scroll quickly to see the rankings or if you fancy spending some time here, settle down and read the additional information. So, let's begin...

1st Place: Minor Figures Barista Standard Oat Milk

Price: £1.80

Taste: 9/10

Location: East London

Additonal Info: I was recommended Minor Figures by my boyfriend's brother's girlfriend. She purchased it from the Five Acres Farm Shop in Bristol and, always keen to try a small sustainable brand, I copied her and ran in to buy the same. After previously using Oatly, she found that Minor Figures mixed much better into her coffee and she felt more comfortable purchasing it knowing it was made locally. Minor Figures is a Carbon Neutral company meaning they offset all of the carbon emissions they create. And, better yet, they are both made and packaged in the UK so there are no carbon emissions from overseas shipping to worry about. This is my new favourite oat milk as it is a Barista milk that also tastes 10/10 in cereal! So, I get the best of both worlds with my tea and my snack. If you are somebody who still purchases from Amazon, you can get a pack of 6 for £7.20 which works out at £1.20 per bottle.

2nd: The Original Oat-ly! Oat-Milk

Price: £1.80

Taste: 9/10

Location: Sweden, The Netherlands, The USA

Additional Info: I used to hate OATLY for the way it mixed in my tea but, I tried it again at a friend's house both in my tea and on cereal and I really liked it! She uses Oatly all of the time and gets along with it really well. Personally I find it goes 'off' quicker than other oat milks I have used so for that reason and the fact it is manufactured outside of the UK, this is in my second place and not my first. One thing I find important to note is that although OATLY is not carbon neutral, they are very transparent about their actions to combat this. You can read all about that here If you are somebody who still purchases from Amazon, you can get a pack of 6 for £7.20 which works out at £1.20 per bottle. There are also questions about how ethical OATLY really is in regards to them suing a much smaller oat milk brand. I will let you make your own judgements on that one.

Purchase: Your local supermarket, Amazon*

3rd: ALPRO Oat Drink

Price: £1.60

Taste: 8/10

Location: UK, Belgium, France

Additional lnfo: ALPRO create a lot of plant based alternatives including milks and yoghurts. My main issue with ALPRO is that it offers two lines of almond milk. The process of making almond milk is incredibly damaging to the environment. If you choose to buy ALPRO, make sure to vote with your money by funding their more sustainable milk alternatives such as their oat products rather than their almond based drinks. If you are somebody who still purchases from Amazon, you can get a pack of  for £11.20 which works out at £1.40 per bottle.

Purchase: Your Local Supermarket, Amazon

4th: MOMA Oat Drink Original

Price: £1.60

Taste: 8/10

Location: London (Very limited info available but MOMA state most of their oats are British)

Additional Info: Other than the fact MOMA was founded by one British man, I really struggled to get any further information about the sustainability of this brand and their process of creating oat milk. The lack of information about this brand is what has stopped it reaching the top three.

5. ALDI ActiLeaf UHT Oat Drink

Price: £0.79

Taste: 7/10

Location: Warwickshire (Limited information available)

Additional Info: This may be strange to say in a blog post like this but this one tastes much more 'oaty' compared to others. Obviously, ALDI is out there to make money by providing cheap alternatives to other supermarkets so they make their own everything which unfortunately includes almond milk. We have very limited information available about the process and origins of their plant based alternatives so if you do shop ALDI, vote with your money and buy the oat!

6. ASDA Fresh Oat Drink

Price: £0.85

Taste: 1/10

Location: Spain

Additional Info: As with the theme of all supermarket branded plant based alternatives, we have very limited info! However, I can say that this did not taste like any other oat milk I have tried and was incredibly watery. 1/10 in tea and 1/10 in my cereal. Do not recommend on a taste point of view and with the lack of information and the fact ASDA also produce almond milk, I would say their main concern with this product is making money and not in providing a suitable alternative.

Oat Milks to avoid that I haven't tried:

1. Morrisons Own Brand (Tried and tested by Ben so you don't have to)
