For quite a while now I have been in the market for a subscription box. A few years ago I was subscribed to beauty boxes such as Birchbox and Glossybox and had been considering resubscribing when I came across book boxes. There are a lot of book box subscriptions out there but a lot are quite expensive. I am always nervous about paying a lot for a subscription box as I may not be a fan of the products inside it. So, when I read that Books That Matter boxes are only £17 + £3 postage and feature only female authors, I was really interested in getting one!
My box arrived in the mail in a grey postage bag and as soon as it arrived I took it to my flatmate's room to get some very aesthetic photographs of it. The box was sealed with a Books That Matter sticker and sported the 'putting the classics of tomorrow in your hands today' slogan along the side. Unlike a lot of subscription boxes the physical box is smaller and flatter, very ideal to slip through your letterbox. I will likely be reusing mine to post things in.
Peeling back the tissue paper, I can see a paper detailing the book choice and the accompanying gifts as well as seeing a very full box! The first thing I actually noticed was a copy of The Happy Newspaper peeking through, but more on that later!
The book chosen for this month's box was Say Say Say by Lila Savage. I had never previously heard of this book but was very pleased with the blurb: "When Ella comes to work for Bryn, he has been caring for his wife alone for a long time. Jill has a brain injury caused by a car accident and is slowly losing her memory. Every day a little more of her disappears. Lonely and exhausted, Bryn and Ella strike up a tentative friendship. His tenderness towards Jill challenges Ella's most deeply held beliefs about love, but it also awakens feelings of envy and desire that Ella struggles to control." I am currently on chapter 5 of this book and so far I am really enjoying it.
The next gifts I notice in my box are some postcards and a bookmark by Mookydoodle. I am currently using the bookmark in Say Say Say and coincidentally, my flatmate and I have been looking for things to decorate our living room walls with. With some white frames, these postcards will go perfect!
Another gift for us was a pocket colouring book and some colouring pencils to go with them! I received Millie Marotta's Beautiful Birds and Treetop Treasures but I saw the majority of people seem to have received Millie Marotta's Animal Kingdom (which I would probably have preferred but pickers can't be choosers). I love colouring so can't wait to get stuck into this. As I have a lot of colouring pencils already, I will probably save the pencils in this box for one of my Christmas Shoebox Appeal boxes in October.
Something we all definitely needed in this box was a vegan snack! We received Kookie Cat's Pineapple Orange cashew & oat cookie. I don't know about you but I have been consuming a considerable amount of snacks during this lockdown so new snacks and new flavours are always welcome in our house!
The final piece, as previously mentioned, was a copy of Emily Coxhead's The Happy Newspaper. I have been following The Happy Newspaper online for literal years and I am so thrilled to finally have my own copy of it! This will definitely become a staple on my coffee table once I have finished reading it for any guests to have a flick through and smile.
Overall, I would rate my first box a 5/5 stars! I am really impressed with Books That Matter and everything they stand for so will definitely be keeping my subscription for at least another month. If you get this subscription box I'd love to hear if you got the same items as me this month or if anybody has any recommendations of other subscription boxes to try, please leave me a comment!
