I Believe in a Thing Called Love | February Book Club | #ThreeHallows
I first heard about I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo through a swap I did over on Instagram last year. I just had to get a hold of the Black Panther book sleeve that came in an illumicrate and luckily, a book instagrammer (I'm not even sure if that is the correct term) was looking to shift hers! As payment, I sent her a book from her wishlist and after reading what it was about, I quickly added it to my own.
The book follows Desi on her mission to get her first boyfriend and how she uses her knowledge of K-Drama to do it. Last year I was introduced to the world of K-Drama by my friends Emma and Siril who recommended I watch Hello My Twenties on Netflix.. and I've been hooked ever since.
The first couple chapters of this book left me feeling a little disappointed. I'd been so excited to read this book but I felt it was written a bit too young for me. I read a lot of YA but this just felt way below me. However, I soon began to notice it was just Desi's conversations with her friends Fiona and Wes that felt too young for me and the rest of the book was actually okay. So, I persisted.
And, I am very glad I did! I fell in love with Luca even quicker than Desi did. A good book to me is one that makes me feel emotions and this book made me feel lots of them. I was so invested in Desi's love life that I felt myself missing my own boyfriend more and more. (My boyfriend lives in the Netherlands so I don't get to see him very often).
As well as excitement and longing this book also made me feel a lot of anger. Most of this comes when Desi makes a decision to sacrifice her own dreams for a boy... The feminist in me was infuriated. But, then I had to take a step back. This was a teenage girl experiencing her very first relationship. A few years ago, I may have even done the same... which actually made me even more angry (though I couldn't take this out on Desi... girl was just trying to live her best life). I'm not sure if I have ever felt true anger at a character in a book before so congratulations Maurene for getting me to feel that!
This book is by far the best book I have read in a very long time (years) and I urge you to read it if you are at all interested in chik lit or K-Dramas. Overall, I definitely give this book 5 out of 5 stars! If you haven't read it yet, you can get your copy with free worldwide shipping here.
