Suicide Squad Movie Review (No Spoilers)

Unless you've been in hiding for the past year, you'll definitely have heard of Suicide Squad: the new DC movie that has caused quite an uproar. Film critics and fans alike have had a lot to say about it. And, I'm quite happy to say that I quite disagree with them and I really enjoyed it.

I've never been a fan of Marvel movies (aside from Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool) so I always assumed that I would hate DC movies also. That was until my boyfriend started showing me Batman movies and I actually didn't hate them. I went to see Batman Vs Superman a few months ago and I have the highly unpopular opinion of actually enjoying it. No, it wasn't the best movie I had seen but I definitely don't think it deserved all of the bad reviews.

So, when bad reviews of Suicide Squad kept coming out I was quite skeptical. I wanted to go into watching this movie with an open mind. But, to be honest, I went in expecting to think it was incredibly mediocre and nothing to shout about. But, I loved it.

Margot Robbie captured Harley Quinn perfectly. We were all quite worried about how such an iconic character was going to be portrayed but Robbie nailed it. In fact, all of the cast did really well in my opinion. I loved Jared Leto as the Joker but I suppose most of you will be hard to win over having seen Heath Ledger's Joker (not gonna lie, I haven't seen Heath Ledger as the Joker.. at least not that I can remember).

One thing I had heard about Suicide Squad was that the Joker was hardly in it.
That's a complete lie.
The Joker was in the movie throughout, in segments. I expected nothing more as this is not his movie. This movie is called Suicide Squad and as the Joker isn't a part of the Suicide Squad, I didn't expect him to be in it quite so much as he was. Yes, a lot of Leto's scenes were cut but if you wanted to go see a Joker movie, don't go see a film titled Suicide Squad. Common sense.

Another element of the bad reviews that has bothered me is that I have seen so many tweets saying how the movie romanticised Stockholm Syndrome.
Again, another complete lie.
The movie makes very clear from the beginning how Harley Quinn came to be the way she is. It was very real about it. And, if you think that is romanticising Stockholm Syndrome then that genuinely confuses me. They captured Harley and the Joker's relationship the way it is: abusive and neglectful. Just because Harley wants to be in that relationship does not mean that Stockholm Syndrome is being romanticised. It is literally just showing you what Stockholm Syndrome is and how it can affect a person.

A lot of you may have seen Jack Howard's rant about Suicide Squad. I watched it before I watched the movie and it put me off a lot. However, having seen the movie I COULD NOT DISAGREE WITH HIM MORE. (apart from his comments about the soundtrack but I'll get to that).
Jack Howard states that there are no scenes (yes there were. choppy, yes. but I personally think that reflected how messed up these characters are), no main character (well, obviously. This is 'Suicide Squad', not 'Deadshot') and no journey/growth. THIS ENTIRE MOVIE IS ABOUT EACH OF THE CHARACTER'S JOURNEY/GROWTH. It is very hard to explain this without giving spoilers so I will just say that each character has their own individual story and 80% of them experience growth in that story. I personally think that Jack Howard and I watched very different films.

In my opinion it would have taken away from the movie had they given it a main character. For example, when you think of Guardians of the Galaxy you immediately appreciate Chris Pratt's character and the rest of the character's only as an afterthought. And, yes, it is a great movie. But the characters in Suicide Squad have too much to them to skim over and be forgotten about. Like I previously said, I went to see Suicide Squad, not Deadshot.

One part of Jack Howard's review I do agree with is his comment about the soundtrack. I feel like the people who made this movie thought 'oh these songs are good', made a playlist out of them and just threw it onto the movie. Yes, I love those songs and listening to the soundtrack without the movie is highly enjoyable. But when watching the movie it does just feel like the songs have been thrown on there for banter.

My only other negative comment about the movie is the amount of shots of Harley Quinn's ass. The first two or three, I was like 'yeah okay, movies need sex appeal' and didn't think much of it.. But seven or eight?! I just felt like I was seeing the same shot recycled over and over again.

Another great part about Suicide Squad that I think everyone will agree with me on.. The Harley Quinn snapchat filter..

I would love for you guys to leave a comment with your opinions on this movie wether they are positive or negative!

  1. I have actually watched this movie and happened to think that it was totally awesome. I loved the part about the witch and it just won me over in that part of the movie.
